Hi Everyone -

What a vibrant month on the gradient of earth awakening, in bloom and hatching from egg. Oh, to imagine the possibilities being born within us, also! Beneath blue sky and breathing in lilac.

A season of seeking and transmitting most potent harmonies. While we inch toward a reality inclusive of interspecies aptitude. Certainly masterful in discovering how! And most interestingly, what it feels like to host this kind of balance in the body.

As construction drones on, even on a quiet island, Eagle says, look in the air. And there he is, soaring above it all. While I wade in the sea, I “think” how lovely it would be to swim with Seal. That moment, like magic, I look over and she’s there; both of us glistening, bobbing heads. ‘Twasn’t my thought at all (best notions rarely are), but a notification. Pollinated in the heart of mutual desire; bioaccumulated affection. Evidenced in bright orange bee bread between beeings.

And where to begin with Swallowtail, whimsically fluttering about! Spider beginning to weave from a flouncy, foxglove crown. Bumbles entering the inner sanctum of flower future! There is where I invest.

Hi Everyone -

I’m often regaling about birdsong in these letters, yet what better news to share? One of spring’s purest forms of information and activation.

Warbling us into a quantum present of choral arrangements cradling millennia. Christening us, even, with melodies at birth. To be spontaneously remembered at any moment. Especially while immersed in the exchange of who inspires our aspiring best.

Just as water imbues and reflects, so does a perching, passerine chorus. Amplified in experiencing sound as visual geometry passing through and around. Ecosystem entanglement forging a shared state; expanded vision.

Ensuring nothing stalls or stales. Sterling structures of earth and ourselves unfurling in unison. Keeping time, detecting pattern within abounding, inviting improvisation. The arrival of celestial songs, received notably through branches, antlers, crowns and air. Even accelerating octaves to the heart!

Our inner-outer exchange escalatingly emphasized. Instruments of spirit; cast of land, carved by storied sea. Molecularly harmonizing in each respire through the reed flute of a body.

Inhale: what is the everlasting nature of our resonance?

Exhale: what are we freshly capable of?

How these inquiries reflect in our ever-faceting perception; current present/current future, even ‘past’. The elements, the senses, the birdsong all-conspiring. Creating symmetry anew in each world imaginable.

The United by Nature: Belugas event this past weekend was inspiring and connective! Hosted by Interspecies Voices and joined by 42 Whale lovers from around the world: Australia, Canada, Greece, Norway, South Africa, the Netherlands, the UK and US, participating live and in the replay. Raising over $1055 CAD and counting!! For the Marineland Belugas and their family in the wild.

I will leave you with three of Beluga’s concluding messages I shared in our follow-up email to participants:

• Through this process and others, we are discovering our personal and aggregate aptitude as generative creators. This pertains to our thoughts, from seeding Beluga-inspired ideas into collective, human consciousness to ensuring we conduct the frequency of optimum outcomes. Realizing how the immaterial informs the material in new and vivid ways.

• To be wild often implies unconfined, with the freedom to make sovereign selections, even if influenced by circumstances outside one’s perceived control. Beluga examples how we can embody the tenants of wildness even in the center of society. To also be unburdened on the adventure of life, carried by the tides influenced by our heart in greatest service to the whole.

• Finally, the Beluga say to trust the timing and time it takes to co-imagine the next, best thing. There are more fibers woven into the material of our mutual success than we can currently conceive.

Hi Everyone -

The animals have been charting my exact course this autumn (more vivid than always). Everything from my movements to bouts of inspiration; delivering key information through people and place. Ultimately stitching together long-tended thoughts into grand arcs of revelation.

This season began with the Beluga of the Saint-Laurent (see my equinox letter). But the momentum never waned. Like my body flew back home but part of me was carried off; by white whale angels to the Arctic / Subarctic. Or perhaps a dimension of me discovered? Residing there all along amongst ocean family + ice.

I’m still astounded what came over me; all of the sudden obsessed with what is up (literally and figuratively). Lucky for me, I live in Canada: there is nothing but above! Transfixed by maps. Zooming in on remote islands; examining estuaries, tributaries, passages and inlets. And who is where? Beluga made a cork board of my mind. Pinning new images every day: Polar Bear, Basking Shark, Sea Otter, Humpback + pertinent excerpts of their histories…places, too: Cook Inlet, PEI, Churchill, Yanrakynnot. Stringing invaluable connection, even context, back and forth across my brain.

On time and on theme, the Snow Geese returned in their annual migration to the Fraser/Skagit River estuaries. Select ones every year enjoying our isle, even. They journey from Wrangel Island, Siberia (which I learned about from them). Home to the world’s grandest Pacific Walrus population, the highest concentration of ancestral Polar Bear dens, critical Grey Whale feeding grounds, most northerly nesting habitat for endangered, migratory birds and an incredible number of vascular plants for the region. Said to have even been the last place Woolly Mammoth resided! All that wonder Snow Geese bring on wings; honk down from the heavens (now I know why they are the most boisterous of waterfowl:). Joining us here on the shared, wet earth of autumn.

Some juvenile Humpbacks remain near while most migrate to Mexico or Hawaii. Heard breathing from shore on crisp, fall mornings of glass. I visited others between Victoria, Canada and San Juans, US. Along with borderless Bigg’s Orca, piercing through mist. Pilgrimages to Sandhill Cranes in sanctuary + Salmon returning up the Capilano. Amongst atmospheric rivers and wilder winds, the bell to gather continually gongs. In the material + immaterial at once.

This letter is a little bit of everything: an update, infusion of frequency and most timely: an invitation. The Beluga have been chatting in any quiet moment of my day (or night). Beluga becoming my default setting these past months. And I’m not the only one! The Beluga independently asked my dear colleague, Christine Noble Seller (Interspecies Voices), to host an event on their behalf, and she invited me to be the guest speaker. The November 15th gathering centers on the Beluga currently in limbo at Marineland, Ontario and how us heart-centered folk can continue to support and listen to them (and fellow Cetaceans) in the ever-changing landscape of captivity all over the world (and in the wild, too). Christine and I have been combing tangible resources, communicating with organizations, staying current with news and remaining allegiant to the requests of these dear Beluga. If you have been feeling them in your own heart, or experiencing the nudge just now, you are most encouraged to attend!

Thank you for reading, as always. This time feels so potent and generative, especially as erosion occurs in other sectors of society. I anticipate a world where communication flows as free as tides between humans and interspecies kin. I feel the Beluga are particularly priming me for this era of communicating on behalf of time-honored, animal systems worldwide. Especially as I share more space with scientists, conservationists, non-profits, animal welfare advocates, documentarians, policy makers, lawyers; even developers, politicians and entrepreneurs. That no matter the situation or who is present, the message of the animals remains as pure as ever, and essential to every solution we seek.

Hi Everyone -

I just returned from a week in Montréal. An unanticipated deep dive into the incredible ecology of the fleuve Saint-Laurent/St. Lawrence river. A piece of the planet that has long enchanted me, but I had no tangible relationship with.

I savor the gifts in maturing. Ever-realizing how my own birth ecology uniquely shaped/s me. In contrast to recent years, specifically living or visiting places to learn from the land (and water); absorb, talk and walk their wisdom. Delighted for what is to be revealed to and through me. The human culture more secondary, although contextually satisfying through anthropological, artistic and agricultural lenses. Discovering the indivisibility of the interspecies, perhaps undetectable at first glance.

I had to attend a meeting in Montréal, unrelated to anything flora or fauna. So I was excited to see how they were conspiring behind the scenes. Especially as I am a pretty ocean-or-bust kind of girl (although I can get giddy about any ecosystem; particularly brackish). I thought, how funny I was being sent into the heart of a bustling city (but an amazing one, no less).

Proximity to Cetacea has always dictated where I lived and traveled. And this trip, serendipitously, was no exception. Near to my arrival, I saw a giant photo of a beluga the size of a building, blocks from my hotel. I knew there weren’t any in captivity in Québec, but I naïvely didn’t understand the correlation between Montréal and my highest frequency of Arctic friends. I immediately did some googling to discover they were only five hours upriver. A southernmost, year-long, estuarine-adapted population! I always thought I had to travel to the tippy top of Manitoba to greet them in Churchill; a literal pilgrimage I have wanted to make for years (only accessible by plane or train). So I was flabbergasted to find this unique population lived so generously near. And frankly, so accessible; visible even from the shores. The belugas wanted to make sure I put it all together, astounding me once again with this unique strategy of cetacean communication.

My whole trip tipped into beluga obsession. My appetite to learn everything about this hallowed population remains insatiable. I thought about dropping everything I had planned to make the journey upriver. But I think this is just the inception point of our physical journey. A marker of proximity to come.

I’m obsessed how the whales (and earth) never stop surprising and spiraling deeper. Capturing our imagination + inspiring connection. It’s one of the reasons I never lose faith; there’s always someone in the wings, waiting for their wisdom to be accessed, whether it be bacteria or a beluga whale. Patient to be called upon. And maybe you relate to that. Wondering when the qualities you cultivate will be in demand. There are a lot of us out here, just waiting for our number to be called. And that excites me beyond linear comprehension!

Autumnal blessings to each of you and this incredible community as a whole. What a beautiful prompt from the Saint-Laurent to hold our lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, estuaries and aquifers in affection and esteem today.

PS: Even as I edit this piece, beluga events continue to unfold. The whales prompted me to uncover they are in Canadian/global news twice. Only in the past couple days! The federal government of Canada is considering a deep water port expansion in the aforementioned Churchill, Manitoba. Directly impacting polar bear/beluga stewarded habitat to cater to emerging Arctic routes to Europe, etc. Secondly, the now-closed-to-the-public Marineland of Niagara Falls, Ontario has requested permits to sell their thirty, remaining belugas in Canadian captivity to a marine park in Zhuhai, China (cetacean captivity, breeding, capture, import + export is now comprehensively illegal in Canada under Bill S-203 since 2019, unless grandfathered in). What an incredible time to reciprocate love + support between our species, even in simply opening our hearts wider to their experience and most wholesome outcomes.

Summer Wonder Reflections

All I see is cedar from my open, upstairs door. Bay waves penetrating boughs. Bucks abound; one in particular.

There were so many moments of the Summer Wonder Series that overflowed the four cups of connection: Barnacle, Humpback Whale, Garden Spider and Anchovy. I’m eager to share both A + B sides of the series here.

Full moons, whale breath, made their way inside.
A home encircled in iridescence: slugs for friends; sharing melon.
A single fruit fly landed on my nose - how cantaloupe am I?
Opening eyes underwater everyday, absorbing sunlit teal through the soul.
Blackberry pricks and barnacle scrapes.
Sundown seal swims. Fern forest at dusk;
one lion roaming.
Returning home to a glass ceiling of stars.

I have never committed to such intensive writing in the summer. Cherishing the opportunity to attempt and distill each week the bioavailable formulas of frequency, medicine and magic radiating from Earth in real time. Hi Everyone -

My Spring was seismic; shifting plates of sanctuary. Metamorphosing desert as an island bloomed around me.

A whole season of sacred protection. Active association beseeching ancient alliance. Constant, current communication with the animals; all adapting to proximate waves of change.

Enough oscillations to uproot a life. One five years in the tending. Like heaven disassembled, but the angels remained: deer, fruiting salmonberry, grandpa-apple, snail. Cradling my heart and head in each moment. Imparting access to spontaneous networks of nourishment.

How relieved I am to be reunited here through written reflections! Not quite sure even where to begin. It’s a longer form in the retelling. One I was actually writing most diligently until a sudden chapter wedged in. I had premonitions, gauzy allegory; but not to the extremes that transpired…

The land I loved and lived upon was sold. There were several scales of uncertainty and imperfection with that home, but my devotion to the yard and everyone who dwelled was exponentially unwavering. The feelings were family; true love forged through grief and bliss. It was the place I felt I finally belonged after immigrating to a new country. Fauna Speak HQ, too!

To say we had different ethics than the new owners falls excruciatingly short in describing how odd and treacherous it all was. Masquerading as virtuous in word, they were disingenuous and dangerous in every interaction. All of our values, all the care that expanded in time with flora and fauna were identified and used to inflict harm. Residue of war and generational cruelty seeped into our previously placid connections. Precipitating vital protections of myself, family and all who had peacefully coexisted before their arrival to the island.

I stopped audibly talking to the animals. Only clicks and whispers would do. We gathered behind fences. Clandestine meetings with blue flies and bees. I had signals with my human neighbors, too. In the end, my already-established community was the only societal support.

Vigilant provision for our cats’ safety, too. The new owners surrounded our sanctuary in literal poison. What were once beautiful boundaries of interspecies inclusivity became lined with rodenticide. Anticoagulants harmful to everyone from squirrels to streams. I combed lengthy legislation and bylaw, contacted organizations, municipalities and advocates. It was painful to feel all my efforts of protection fall through the cracks of bureaucracy. Again I discovered it was only my attentiveness and alliances that would ensure safe passage for all through this time.

At one of the deepest troughs, Robin lifted my own, weary wings. I had never before seen them chasing squirrels in flight. After three days of watching robins defend their nest, they shared how it is never comfortable sitting on eggs for so long, but that the horizon of blue shells bearing bird-fruit is one’s reward. And literal legacy. They displayed how the partners take turns sitting on the nest, too. Which was exactly what my husband and I would do. At some point the physical unsafety became so unpredictable that I decided someone had to be home at all times. And I sat on that nest…until the very end.

Contrast like this…what a revelation. Years of relationship building now rang explicit. I could find a single deer hair in the grass. Sense the bellies, swole with fawns. Five generations I had now lived alongside. The new owner kept telling people I was attached to this yard, as if it explained something in her favor. When in fact I was that humble habitat; am still. The paradise I was honored to tend and nurtured by in return overlapped into my own field and entire identity. A humble, perfect parcel of potential because of all who once gathered there. A swath now a swatch of my heart.

If you have been following along these last few years, you might predict one of the most challenging aspects of this transition regard the deer. I always knew I wouldn’t be there forever, but I wasn’t sure how the page would turn. And when.

Our matriarch Mama passed on the last day of March, mere weeks before the wild crescendo of unprecedented protections. Remaining was Deerlores, tending auntie to the not-yet-independent Lil Blessing. Who was born in July of 2024 to Mama. Oh how much closer we all became, finding them in the forest and meeting there, instead of our door like old times. Stumbling upon humble ways to prepare for the uncertainty of leaving them, and the land that in some way birthed us all. Deerlores and I conversed the whole way through. I memorized Lil Blessing’s scent (sweet like musk + milk). All parachuting into this new era, ready or not. I collected their hair in oyster shells, pressed flowers from the yard into beeswax. Transplanted every plant from my garden. Left no trace of us to close it out as the rarified sanctuary it had been. Alerted everyone from the birds to the worms. While my tender heart still grieves the fruit trees who remain, steadfast in place. Like a grandpa and grandma in time.

I began to measure everything in blooms. I made it all the way to cherry blossoms, but not quite ripe fruit. Buttercups the eyes and deer devour. Then a finale of foxglove. First trumpet from honeysuckle and it was time to go.

Deerlores gave birth to her first fawn about a week after I moved. She made sure a neighbor captured a clip of her and the wobbly, wee one with their constellation of spots. Magically, the film made its way to me. If cameras were invented for just that moment, it has been all worth it. Images are how I have been able to piece together so many ephemeral moments of connection with them in particular. Tracking progress and health, too. But you can imagine the bell of my heart gonging in grief to have not been there. As I had for the fawns prior, increasing in intimacy each time. Even Deerlores as a babe. To be so close on the same island but so far at the same time. Yet we realized the story had to go like this. I also know in my heart that the story is still being written; the story the gift, too.

We are in a new house now. Tart huckleberries are the taste of resurrection. Telegraphic chatter of Steller’s in the trees. Ocean waves lulling to sleep. From intimate, doe companions to a bay of only bucks; I still feel a little in-between. Our home went from deer sanctuary to a shrine of deer love. Each day discovering the blessings tucked in. Robin shells strewn about to reflect the new, blue horizon. Coming off eager, I’m sure, to all the animals of this next neighborhood.

I feel like the land and the sea, plants and animals have been separating out the yellow yolk of me since I was born. Swashing me back and forth between a cracked shell of heaven and earth. Whales bringing me to deer, flowers bringing me fauna, infinite to infinitesimal; back and forth…over and over. Until the cycle becomes soothing. And I am a bright, yellow ball of light.

Sun that grows my fields of green the ruminants daily digest. Ungulates I can’t stop thinking about. Dreaming up the lengthier legacy of how we can be closer than before. Accelerating our particles of potentiality, activated only by each other. Waves that stimulated such tectonic shifts now seasons ago become the ever-realized aspiration. A life unfolding.

Hi Everyone -

From the belly of Imbolc in the center of winter, the animals have inspired a second offering for our new year: AAA: Ask Animals Anything

Animals are an incredible intersection of physical wisdom and incorporeal insight, skillfully situated in the present. In seeking animal expertise, we utilize a most kindred navigational system.

Ubiquitously earth, our biological overlap with the animals is an unparalleled asset in understanding ourselves and what’s possible in ways we weren’t taught. Many examples in mammal bodies, even! Species-specific knowledge, cosmic and elemental connection; fauna culture, families and groups all hold a piece of the puzzle simply not found in human context. Both our lineages and destines are indivisible.

The entirety of my offerings + ethos are already in devotion to the animals in this way. But I felt the velvety-nose nudge from them to create a specific space dedicated to the idea that we can not only ask the animals anything, but it is intrinsic to our most wholesome futures. That it is time to increase and strengthen lines of communication amongst our species. To inquire of their needs and knowledge in symbiotic benefit to all.

I love their cleverness in naming this new offering, too. An analog throwback to when A’s, sometimes in repetition, were used to hoist one’s service to the top of the list in the phone book. The animals want to increasingly collaborate and resource. Maybe even be the first we think of with an inquiry or challenge, but certainly always considered. Wanting to be on speed dial, they say.

They are eager to release this offering because things are speeding up; expansion accelerates. You’ve likely noticed your own relationship to time, memory and future all shifting. How you can walk within time and bounce up and down; there’s an elasticity to what previously felt concrete. Prompting us to change the ways we have been synthesizing and doing. Older systems are too slow and crumbling to keep up with the pace of insight required, but thankfully all we have to do is connect to gain access to the aforementioned navigation. In this trajectory, interspecies communication transitions from niche to necessary. With very real implications to ecosystem health, human health, human systems, veterinary care, conservation, our relationship to science in general, even a shared cosmology. But also our relationships; the ones we seek, the ones we have. Our joy, our emotions, our needs as humans. We can ask the animals anything.

Inquiring in this way strengthens of our web of connection. Whilst widening the aperture for more human participation. Find yourself deeper in the inner circle of the animals and our interwoven future. Ask anything.

Even reading this is a gift back to the animals and our mutual dreaming, they say, from our bodies to theirs and back again. So thanks for reading along.

January Greetings + My Newest Offering

1/9/25

Hi Everyone -

The still time of year. Spiraled inward, on back of Pegasus; cocooned. Behind eyelids seeing shapes, muffled rumblings of what’s to come. Time continuing to lose its grip; numbers restored in chorus. Thirteen peanuts a jay fit into his mouth and a bobbing triad of pinnipeds. I jumped into the cold sea. Behind, blue mountains smocked in white. Dreaming of whatever insulates otter, or orca.

All of the sudden it feels like we can go anywhere; in utero and into the future at once. My cat has been exampling this to me for some time. I see her in seals; snow geese who stop by. Most recently, a great gray owl. I used to experience it like a shape-shifting. In contrast, my other cat Orca quite steadily remains a combination of jaguar and her namesake. But with Vaquita, it increasingly feels like a traveling. Where I go, there she is. This gold point above us beaming into receptive ones of her choosing. She’s quite nurturing and protective. The only one in our house who has conceived someone other than realities. Real, true kittens; three (!) she brought into our world. And we all learned to raise each other well. To this day taking turns being mother and mothered.

Late last year felt like a lioness. All the regaining of my own, energetic territory I had been doing all these years was magnified and expedited. One final push to enter January as much me as I could be. Funnily, our own island lion may have moved on. Whispers he swam to the mainland. Others, perhaps, now adapting to cougar paws on shared earth. But they are certainly blessed, as he was both generous and radiating to our small community, especially those who embraced him. I like to imagine him swimming in moonlight, his tail his rudder in a placid sea. Guiding me also in the direction of our now, shared vision.

Dreaming, too, with fawns in deer bellies; beneath hollow hair and stars. Their own spots still constellation in my sky. All of us in and outside of wombs in our own way. My cervidae family has gifted such a glimpse into generation, and even struggle. But the fawns and the dawns continue to arrive, faster than ever. Quickening the necessary comprehension to keep pace with fresh potential. The animals have always been my respite and protection, then my source of inspiration and expansion. Now, perhaps, enough progress has been made in our human hearts to go farther into the forest and lighter in the sky than ever; together.

Mule deer fawns form for 200 days, and I have a new offering that has been gestating for some time, too. I am very excited to share with you all the details below!

Amongst the quiet and rainy, winter days, our island swan feels extra social. A little bit of activity and here comes Charlotte with her tail fluttering fast as a lamb’s! She uses her mouth like a horse, grabbing at whatever is nearby. Making little coos atop the lap of the waves. January is extra quiet here for everyone, no matter the species. Even the seals linger longer with their selkie soul-stares. As much as I love the sun and ease of summer, there is something remarkable about the center of winter, when you truly realize we are all each other have. I’ve always loved the phrase: love grows in small houses. It seems to be the case for tiny islands, too.

Hi Everyone - 

Autumn on an island restores my routine of writing and reflection. As much as I cherish an extroverted summer, how satisfying to admire the year’s forming growth ring in the macro. All the intelligence the sun and sea hath supplied. Both the sweet and bitter leaves, plus celestial information. Tree needles like antenna, speaking with the stars. Seeds storing millennia. It is truly a wonder what our bodies can translate. And what other bodies, like tree bodies, can reflect of our own. Like sap that does everything from thicken to quicken!

A recurring message I’ve heard from flora + fauna this year is how increasingly imperative it is to view our bodies as earth; marvel of our bodies as biological books checked out of earth’s vast, genetic library. That to understand and cherish our bodies is to offer the same in return. The innumerable personal, societal and environmental implications of seeing oneself worthy of earth. The balance that begins within. 

Speaking of loving bodies, my deer friends cluster wider with the return of the bucks. Often making their way to the yard past dusk or in the wee hours of morn. Even in the pouring rain, they lay for hours, bellies to the ground and beaming love. It’s an ecstatic feeling amidst so much heart-on-offer. Especially when you whisk in the smell of them. Like horses with no barn and their own musk entirely. Wet moss and falling leaves weaving intoxicating aroma on the warp threads of ever-present sea air. And we all blend together. 

I have a few more gatherings in 2024, including a December Animal Communication Practice Group and, of course, the monthly Whale + Dolphin Circles. I am also feeling the nudge to share again about my Land Communication session. Hearing that this is a lovely time of year to commune with the land in reflection and into the season of dreams. I will be offering a discount on this 75-minute session through November (more below).

Hi Everyone - 

Summer is difficult to put into words. More a feeling. Like being carried on a current. With golden edges. A pursuit of warm pockets. Punctuated by cool sea and cool mornings that linger with the smell of deer. 

I’ve been wanting to write for so long. But still I feast on the fruit of the season. Digesting skin, seeds and flesh of light’s most recent musings. Sharing amongst animal friends. And curious humans, too. 

I swam with seal often; find them inseparable from surf. I am at once them when submerged. The movement of sea how seal speaks. And when the waves rake back across the pebbles, your stone-spine communes. 

Fawn is growing beneath my eyes another season. This time, a boy with antlers just beginning to bud. Like a wee prince aware of the island kingdom he inherits. Independent and resolute, born in the summer of mountain lion who swam upon these shores.

I heard the brief clicks of a dolphin underwater. Not just a highlight of this heat, but a jewel in the seagrassy-gold crown of my life. I breathe for and into this kind of intersectionality each moment. The way sun reflects melon-red the day's deepest hues.

I look forward to pulling out more strands of the season as the air cools. Cradling ripeness forth into autumnal dreaming. Forever communing with the animals, elements, flora, stars + sea.

Now for that sweet little portrait...
I was so excited to share this portrait with the deer (see the reel here) and now y’all! Olivia de Recat did such an incredible job capturing our most precious trinity’s individual energies and collective love. I can’t imagine celebrating / grieving without art and memorialization. Absolutely grateful to have this keepsake featuring Bebe Deer as we carry forth with the next generation, Bebe’s lil brother Lil Blessing. 

The 100 for the Ocean event’s successful campaigning reached my stories every time I opened the app, but I knew I was going from the very first glimpse. Less like an invitation and more like a chasm of destiny opening up in the middle of a relatively routine week. They say never meet your heroes, but that hesitance makes me question who the heroes might be. My whole everything instantaneously knew how important it was to attend; immerse in each person’s stories, efforts, images and impact. Especially while most hours of my day are spent imagining how to bridge intuitive interspecies communication with the disciplines of biology, naturalism, agriculture, science, psychology, technology, both human and animal medicine…even industry and development on the periphery. But the radiating center for me has always been conservation, and optimum as possible conditions for each species to thrive according to their own will, ecological needs and spiritual purpose. Not sure what excites me as much as how to bring the wisdom of the animals and even other dimensions to our own practical efforts here on earth. And as always, the orca and other cetaceans are a part of this grand orchestration.

From the surreality of Sunday’s 100 for the Ocean gathering on Granville Island, Vancouver, BC, there remains much to synthesize and share. Hosted by Paul Nicklen, Cristina Mittermeier (SeaLegacy co-founders) and Chase Teron, it was the feeling of being swept up in the most beautiful bait ball of ocean enthusiasm; left in amazement of who showed up and how many were nourished. To physically gather amongst conservation photographers + scientists who have shone as north stars in my personal mythology for so long felt like a confluence of unprecendented inspiration. For over six hours we gathered together in a series of galleries and one theatre, saturated in appreciation of how the animals indefinitely reach our hearts and how we communicate those stories to others, even finding kindred spirits along the way.

It’s not an easy code to crack. Before my work as an interspecies communicator I was exploring the delicate art of framing ecological narratives as a young photojournalist. Torn between telling the story and advancing the story along myself. Discovering how to keep my own heart buoyant amongst apathy, neglect, greed, corruption, even outright horror; all the while inspiring others. Thankfully, co-inspiration is earth’s speciality and echoes everywhere, from orca pods to gallery walls. Increasingly the animals are my editors and sole accountability, assigning the stories and whispering just the right angle. Keeping my heart cushioned more properly while still pressing on, more aware of what’s at stake than ever.

I couldn’t have imagined all the little things that would be such a balm to my being this past Sunday. Thought it curious how many didn’t grow up near the ocean either, but were certainly born with oceans of purpose in their hearts. And gathering amongst several radiant-with-devotion women: Mitty (Cristina), Dr. Erin Ashe, Executive Director and Senior Scientist of Oceans Initiative working in dedication to the southern resident orca alongside her husband Dr. Rob Williams and Dr. Hannah Stewart, Head of Science at Coral Gardeners. Each as charming as they are pioneering.

A theme that surfaced in conversation and the event itself is that conservation elicits everyone’s unique contribution, and each gesture is important. Anyone reading this knows how insurmountable it can feel at times. Thankfully, 100 for the Ocean in all its artistry and exploration examples the very energy that encourage us forward. A facet of SeaLegacy I find most inspiring is that amongst producing some of the most potent, visual stories on the planet, they are cultivating systems and critical connections for optimum impact. Presenting it all so succinctly that anyone, from the largest entity to the humblest of humans, may begin/continue to see where they can fit into the far more interesting story of ecological balance.

The promotional video for the 100 for the Ocean event concludes with the line: “the right story changes everything.” What an honor to have been in a room of people for an evening determined to do just that.

I’m still pinching myself I’ve been in a room with people who have been in the presence of narwhals, like Mark Williams. To meet fellow islander Emmett Sparling was such a treat, as well as chatting big cats with Laura Merz all the way in from the East Coast. And Paul, thank you for enriching our lives with the Arctic and so much us all these years.

Hi Everyone - 
 

I am still afloat in the feelings of back-to-back visits from humpback and orca. Whales continue to hug the island, making each moment electric with potential. When you could see a cetacean in any second, what else is possible?
 

I kept wandering the island this winter. To the end of deer trails and any civilization. Ambling adjacent to sea in every condition. Awash in atmosphere-induced contemplation. Having little idea the earthen course I was learning would be the same one delivering me to humpback in spring. A metaphor for what my whole life has been attempting: a terrestrial path parallel with whales. Recalling that little girl in Kentucky when she first glimpsed a photo of Mysticeti underwater, cried about tuna or watched Free Willy for the umpteenth time. Feelings no one could describe to her in 1993 were premonitions of her very life to live. 
 

It’s amazing how linguistically similar whale is to "whole," "well," "while" and "whoa." How they example each one! Concepts I always experience in conversation remain surreal in physical proximity. Especially in meeting one of the freshest cetaceans: a three-month-old orca calf practicing their most precious tail slap. And one in particular who elicited a huge whoa: Stanley, born in 2000. A giant dorsal’d male with a characteristic nick 1/3 of the way down his fin. I just can’t get him out of my head. And amongst him was the family of matriarch Eider, born in ‘88 just like me. What an honor to meet the kin of part of the cohort I came to the planet with!
 

Writing to y’all from low tide as a group of three girls pull their sailboat out of the water after a lesson. Younger me joining their seaside childhood in gratitude of a currently amphibious life. Unencumbered to envision a world worthy of whales. A worth they reciprocate so generously.

I’ve been loved by so many trees. Beginning before I realized I was a recipient of their generous affection. Prior to understanding they not only held earth together, but our hearts, too. Yet one in particular inspired me to write this piece: our backyard crabapple.

It’s his comedic charm that always strikes me. Like a lighthearted patriarch, crabapple’s favorite joke is to steal my hat. Shading the narrow deer path to the forest, it’s easy to become entangled in his loving embrace of lichen and knuckly branches. One night my hair got so caught I had to holler for help, but honestly, I was flattered. Reminding me even of my own dad who was always cleverly insisting his daughter hang out just a little while longer.

These are not often characteristics associated with plants. Even in the sentience society is slowly attributing to them, there remains rather singular emphases on function, value and aesthetic. Yet despite the plant kingdom being seemingly stationary, they are most dynamic and creatively penetrative. I find flora to be so fond of us, craving cooperation; often jovial and skilled in relating. In their presence, I either have a huge smile on my face or become suspended in some state of awe. Additionally, I experience a profound sense of eldership in connecting with such terrestrial leviathans as trees. Grateful to their unmoving presence in our lives. Connecting me with my best parts, and in crabapple’s case, even my paternal lineage.

Unbottling the notion of shared sentience can be exhilarating. An endless corridor of innerconnectedness, core memories and collaborative potential. Plants are constantly observing, it’s no wonder they are experts of us. Kindly reminding that our well being is a result of their purposeful generosity. But that we can also contribute to their success, having barely scratched the surface of what we actually teach and represent to each other. Creating less division amongst species that was only ever artificial to begin with.

An aspect of tree medicine assists in witnessing/nurturing dormant parts of ourselves. Trees can mirror the quiet slumber of our deep feelings and facilitate the peaceful presence necessary to awaken them. Ushering us in the direction of spring. Seasons of awareness that benefit generations of animals, plants and humans alike. Inspiring a more mutually decided upon future.

In the very act of writing this piece, more memories unearthed. Crabapple’s insistence I go deeper was far more purposeful than I had preconceived. A long-dormant memory surfaced of my dad planting a young crabapple tree in the yard of my childhood home. Reminding me that crabapple had been there all along. No matter how many miles and borders I live away, there will always be a tiny, tart apple representing the indivisibility of love, presence, ancestors, earth; even myself.

When the crabapples ripen this year, I will nibble the fruit with fresh understanding. Fruit born from the collaborative efforts of pollination. A multi-species achievement with nectar nourishing the highest frequencies of our ascending planet. Leaving me more amazed than ever to say ‘I am what I eat.’ That the love in me was born from both human family and plant parenting and it’s up to me to embrace all their affection.

I encourage readers to write/create about their favorite tree. Describing attributes, quality of presence; flora as placeholders and memory keepers. So we may populate our world with stories of the ones who have been loving us all along. Like a scrapbook of elder affection for them to receive in return.

I approach writing about qualities of imagination with great humility. Countless times questioning if I am worthy of the magnitudinous task at all? Yet my uncontainable enthusiasm impels me. Admiring imagination like a rotating prism, expecting nothing but surprise at each glimmering facet of revelation. Leaving generous room for inarticulable attributes and subjective experience.

I would personally describe imagination as a faculty that defines me yet I could never define. Delivering insight into each moment. Funneling memories, guidance and inspiration into a discernible corridor. With the capacity to translate energies into digestible morsels of one’s perception. I would even propose imagination as a place of translation, or a universal translator. Communicating ideas across time, dimension, language, etc.

I imagine imagination as a liminal expanse where my ‘finite self’ can be reached by those invested ‘beyond’. A setting for hallowed dialogue with who and what wants to be born from my physically incarnated consciousness. A place of free will and carefully considered creation. Where ideas are incubated to be inspiring or even selected from. The imagination can be quite specific, too. Expanding beyond abstract art and allegory. Informing us about everything from plant properties and tectonic plates to portals within space and interpersonal relating.

How to dial up the sky? Draw a line to pure inspiration? Beyond time; where intellect may mute and raw energy flows. It is important to consider the collectivity and universality of imagination, yet in the same breath how we uniquely access, speak and funnel its contents. Closed or busy imaginations may even be passed over. As much as I encourage my imagination to inform my intellect, I discourage my intellect from gatekeeping my imagination. Although the mind does frequently make good points!

Creativity is a fundamental key of access to imagination. Imagination that considers memories, origin, purpose, intended function and beyond. As one of our purest frequency’d apparatuses, imagination also connects us to fellow creation, both current and future. Sparking terrestrial and cosmic waves of influence. Allowing humans to vision themselves once more as both creator and creation. In this dimension and beyond. This perception of self can be instinctual if untampered with and intrinsic to the most wholesomely generative realities. Imagination prompts creativity prompting increased and easier access to imagination prompting further creativity inspiring creation. I personally appreciate dancing with potential in an imaginative setting well in advance of something physically hatching.

We spoke of children as most imaginative creatures in part one. As adults, imagination is often associated with artists; creators with a curiosity or vessel for their specific avenue of imagining. The imagination can be amorphous without a request, routine or container. It can be as simple as making an inquiry of your personal imagination, or the incomprehensible trans-dimensional highway of energetic information. What are the limits? As far as you can imagine. Simply bring something to hold the portion you request. As a communicator, I cherish the consensual container of a session to dialogue. As an artist, I enjoy the mediums of writing, photographic composition and film. And how heavenly it feels when these overlap!

The end goal of intuition/imagination is not predicting omniscience. Rather, present participation. Especially if you do not believe the story is already written and your destiny sealed. Involving a gradual comfort with synthesizing ever-expanding amounts, categories and conduits of information. Harmonized aliveness is an artful practice of sovereign-yet-cooperative choice in how one is inspired to participate in each moment. Why the animals always direct us there via their example or explicit advice. Especially because from the fullness of presence you can pivot anywhere with ease. Even outside the finite.

I see the mind as a kind of father, offering instruction, cumulative experience, protection and boundary. And intuition like the mother, moving about lots; holding many perspectives and care at once. Sensitive and in tune. Together capable of facilitating consistent connection to our imaginative space, thus why their balance is so important. Our relationship to our own parents or society might reveal something about the interplay of linear logic and intuition in our own life. And if necessary spending time reshaping the mind and opening the aperture of intuition to create the necessary cooperation for optimum function. If the mind is a bank, imaginational contents a currency and intuition an access, we can be as abundant as we would like in imagination if we understand the motivations of the mind. As well as our intuitive selves as instruments of the infinite.

All this can feel painstaking at times. We may become frustrated with the pace/process. Grow tired, even. Often our fatigue of learning to stay buoyant in all conditions is exactly how rhythm, pleasure, parable and friendship find us. Assistance of all kinds. Like snail, for instance. If we slow down enough (a perquisite of expanded awareness), to gastropod’s pace, we can isolate and lovingly acknowledge any blocks to intuition and dissolve them. Just how snail devotedly decomposes leaf litter on the forest floor. Creating space for the most current and sovereign energetic information to flourish. Which can be a relief for modern people constantly subject to non-consensual stimuli. Not to mention our own stories on repeat.

In this stretch of transformation, interspecies relationship becomes pivotal to our success in reimagining our shared and personal worlds. I hesitate to suggest anything too human throughout this whole process. Not that we don’t have it in us, but expansion is not exclusive to our kind. The whole point is to realize cooperation amongst species, realm and faculty, so it’s best to operate from that frequency most frequently. And that’s where we’ll pick up for part three in approximately one month from this post date.

Hi Everyone - 

Robinsong bookends each day. Beginning around 4:40 am: dawn’s first choral notes. Often yanked from dream world with cat pounces to catch it. Suddenness softened by melody + light.

Octopus has me combing tide pools most evenings. I have this psyche-seed planted to meet a cephalopod this year, make a friend perhaps! I can tell a bit of what they’re up to already. Luring me to the intertidal each day with a distant dream. A loose plan pricked with the needle of another species who wants to sew something. I recently met an anemone in my home pools; I’ve yet to encounter one in four years of walking the beach. Then a few days later, sand dollars! Ne’er have I ever seen sea biscuits wash ashore here. 

I know this strategy well. Whales have been siren-songing me across earth and into the sea for as long as I can remember. Knowing I would do anything for a chance meeting with them. My seal bond is quite strong, as a result. I have come to know the consistent presence of pinniped people. Yearning, even, when their bright, bald heads descend beneath the waves.

Speaking liminally, spring has been full-bellied with notable intersection. Like raven cawing from spruce the same time sea lion arfs in the distance. Or the vision of seagull atop forest fir canopy. Eagle who sounds like deer amongst the trees. Robin's closing number at dusk.

Share Fauntology

I have divided this piece into three sections. The first explores our sensory spectrum and what impacts human imagination.

We spoke frequently about imagination in the recent cohort of my Intro to Animal Communication Workshop. On the journey of intuitive interspecies connection, a common question is: am I imagining it? I cherish this inquiry because it is one of my favorite glimpses into how modern humans synthesize non-verbal data. And a whole host of reflections critical to the restoration of communicative channels. And most comprehensively, our collective evolution.

The irony of our ‘imagining’ hesitance is that imagination is among our greatest spaces of immaterial connection. Antidotes to the concern of ‘making it up’ include stronger relationship with our faculties of perception. Taking the time to re-understand, describe and support how information uniquely moves through us. It can be a patient process of expanding our incorporeal awareness of sensation and realm. Especially as we have many barriers to imagination and intuition as humans. Thus why I cherish interspecies support along the way that operates outside these very limitations.

Our own lived experience/subsequent stories can influence a sense of trust in our faculties of feeling. For example: socialization, schooling, peer feedback, familial commentary, ancestral memories, artificial matrices, theology, ideology, selective thinking, etc. Unchecked, the pure spark of our imagination can often trigger subdivisions of the mind or psyche that either protect or deflect; directing the message based on prior signaling. Prompting the inspired information down a less hospitable corridor where the quality can either degrade or downright disappear. Here I enjoy the metaphor of a pinball machine, where the ball represents inspired information that can either get caught up or lost entirely during the game. Alternatively, the pinball can stay in play for as long as possible and reach new levels with a skilled player aware of the course and controlling the flippers.

I want to be sure and express my admiration of the human mind here; the indiscernible liminal amongst the brain, animating spirit and elsewhere. An antenna capable of receiving and emitting. This piece is in no way my effort to disparage the mind or logic. They are intrinsic to our success and survival, just like each psychological mechanism we carefully crafted to get us to this moment. As the seasons of earth example, everything has an intended purpose for a specific time. And there is tremendous freedom in accepting what got us here, even ancestrally or psychologically.

What I am comfortable expressing is how we have been leaning so heavily on material logic as a society. Discouraged even from exploring the answers in and around us. Considerations that induce a deep ache to remedy what is out of balance. A version of immaterial logic, perhaps?

All these components: brain, mind, cognition, logic, psyche, senses, physical, spirit, consciousness, heart, imagination, intuition, soul. There is tremendous overlap amongst them; they feel to bleed so beautifully into each other. The reason why we may not be able to fully distinguish them from each other is their inherent inseparability. For instance:

• Are the heart and imagination one in the same or just often in agreement?

• Does the mind live in the brain?

• What about our gut as a brain?

• Can a part of us have a mind all their own?

• What parts of ourselves belong to others?

• If consciousness unifies in ‘higher’ dimensions, what does that imply to the ones we can perceive?

• Are faculties simply channels of varying frequency?

There are so many fascinating entry points of exploration here, all in the direction of how you uniquely function and operate as a vessel of light and instrument of information. Understanding oneself dimensionally via terrestrial reflection is a most wonderful foundation (more on that in part three).

Specifically within the study of animal communication, a hurdle of embracing intuition is the mind’s frequent concern with whether something is right or wrong; sometimes thick in the mud of dichotomous thinking (conditioned even). Worried about whether we are stepping outside the lines. Part of the mind’s job is to communicate what preserves our well being, after all! Intelligently integrating the requests and needs of the body, not just our will. Interacting with imagination can feel like an entirely different skill set, more concerned with purpose, inspiration and direction. Not to imply one’s imagination lacks precision. But operating from an imaginative space can entail nebulous, ever-expanding structure. Releasing one to proceed beyond prostrate dichotomy into dimensional harmony more sovereign and creative in nature (pun intended). Allowing both the mind and imagination to shine according to their design in cooperation.

Continuing in this example of faculty interplay: if the imagination emphasizes our perceptions and feelings critical to fluid communication, but the mind or body has a concern for our well-being, there can be too big an impasse for the original insight to proceed. But perhaps the message intended all along can be received: what is blocking a sustained flow of information, and is that mechanism contributing to the overall good? And the fascinating follow-up question from here is: what aspect of our intelligence is detecting and relaying this higher perspective?

Personal prompts to dig deeper often manifest as synchronicity or even grief. For many of us, it was the coming or going of a loved one, human and animal alike, that inspired our journey as seekers of non-finite connection. I have come to cherish both measures, describing grief ultimately as a catalyst (deserving of its own piece). And synchronicity as a tear in the fabric of our reality, creating a portal of transmission for new information and actual synchronization of selves amongst realms.

As we increasingly notice and embrace the universality of interspecies and inevitably interrealm communication, we may still prioritize certain well-trodden paths of the mind over the wide expanse of imagination. It is a gradual process of finding trust and comfort in how accessible our imagination actually is. Imagination often banished to other realms or relegated to children and a select few. Collective imagination deemed fantastical despite endless examples of it societally (so much so that it is often exploited).

Yet like a conceptual north star above us, we may remind our mind-bodies that it is not only safer-than-ever to exist imaginatively, but critical to our species’ destined evolution and communicative capacity. We must further understand, experience rather, imagination and all of its ‘in-understandable’ qualities to distinguish it from increasingly obsolete, finite data infrastructure. Adopting ever-appropriate systems that welcome and efficiently process current and/or inspired information; informed but not impeded by past experiences. And interestingly enough, the ability to do this at will. But that’s all big picture; wider concepts of inspiration. Each layer of understanding is intelligently presented to us at the appropriate time for pleasant-as-possible, optimum integration.

One becomes good friends with the inner child at this juncture. The more retroactive love and acknowledgement they receive, the more comfortable they are to flourish and facilitate insight currently. We learn to parent and be parented by many facets of ourself in this process. Symbiotic nourishment of the multidimensional self (often with ancestral and ecological implications) is a frequent pitstop on the journey of animal communication that one might not initially expect. Restoration that radiates outward from us in every direction, inspiring it in others.

Is the question ‘what is imagination’ even answerable? There is a reason why it is associated with children. Not because it is exclusive to them, but perhaps they are guardians of it on this planet? Their innocence rivaling the purity of imaginative space. Certainly not requiring the explanation we do here. And that begets the rabbit hole of what that child understands. And who they are. Nearest to the frequency of the multidimensional self, perhaps? Certainly one close to the ‘other side’ and what we are attempting to piece together. We shall resume in part two with our imagination question specifically. And hopefully keep inquiring of imagination and skilled custodians of the space throughout our lives, each time getting a better sense.

Hi Everyone - 

Migratory sea lions have moved in, taking up residence on a little island usually occupied by oystercatchers + summer seals. Yesterday, I could even hear their arfing from the yard. It was like I dialed my younger self and held up the phone, ‘are you hearing this? Our sea dreams come true!’

I continue to pinch myself, in a nice way. Every sea star at low tide, ocean-top mating mergansers, the shy and tropical-looking tanager newly arrived. Presence-populating joy. 

It’s the simplest of pleasures that spark; drop a pin at extraordinary intersections. Combust tiny caverns to fill with something akin to honey. Further forming a rich and textured mindscape. Especially as one gets older and is presented with the opportunity to pack concrete heaviness into holes or imbue them with a flexible, reflective amber. Like cetaceans chose the conduit of sea, we also have the opportunity to stretch for our favorite medium. To create both a pliable inner and outer reality. Worlds that billow outward with ease. Harmonious paradigms, nutritious like nectar; sweet and shareable. 

I hope my mind and heart alike resemble honeycomb. That bees and beings find renewal there. We are vessels after all. Instruments ourselves. A humble reed-becoming-flute. Discovering our capacity to harmonize with our environment as both the tune and the crooner. Recalling one's melody amongst rushes + thrushes. And the cacophony of a sea lion colony. 

The pinnipeds were precursor to a visit from humpback. It was the briefest vision; a whale in transit. But all my heart needed. They fill the air anyways with their breath and breadth of presence. Experts of occupying space (pun intended, they say). Orca + humpback have remained in the sound (pinch), saturating the atmosphere with a levity only leviathan know. The counsel of whales has arrived.
